Four Ways that Muscles Can Generate Force

  1. Isometrically
    1. Static
    2. No Change in Joint Angle
    3. The amount of force being expressed is equal to the resistance.
  2. Isotonic Concentric
    1. Dynamic.
    2. Change in joint angle.
    3. Concentric: Joint angle is decreasing.
    4. Force is greater than the resistance.
  3. Isotonic Eccentric
    1. Dynamic.
    2. Change in joint angle.
    3. Eccentric:  Joint angle is increasing.
    4. Resistance is greater than muscle force  (force is less than resistance).
  4. Isokinetic
    1. Dynamic
    2. Movement through a range of motion at a constant angular velocity.
    3. Can’t do it with free weights.  Need a special machine, set at a certain amount of degrees per second.
