Personal Training and Strength and Conditioning Certifications

American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) 

Certified Personal Trainer (CPT)

Intended for certification of trainers working with a healthy population or with those medically cleared to participate in physical activity.

Requirements:  High School Diploma, +18 years old, certified in CPR with AED.  

 

Health Fitness Instructor (HFI) Intended for certification of leaders of activity intended for low to moderate risk persons or those with diseases such as hypertension and asthma.

Requirements:  Associates or Bachelor's degree in a health-related field, current CPR certification.

 

Exercise Specialist Intended for certification of professionals advising individuals with metabolic, pulmonary or cardiovascular illness.

Requirements: Bachelor's degree in health-related field, 600+ hours of clinical exercise fieldwork, certification as a basic life support provider or CPR for the professional rescuer. 

 

Registered Clinical Exercise Physiologist Intended for certification of professionals advising individuals with a wide range of chronic illnesses and disabilities.

Requirements:  Master's degree in exercise science, movement science, exercise physiology or kinesiology.  600+ hours of fieldwork, or the equivalent Exercise Specialist certification.  

 

National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS)  

 

Intended for individuals who wish to train athletes for enhancement of sport performance.  

Requirements:  Bachelor's degree and current CPR with AED certification.

 

Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) Intended for individuals who wish to design and implement safe and effective exercise programs to meet the fitness goals of the general population client.

Requirements:  18+ years of age, high school diploma and current CPR with AED certification.

 

National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM)  

 

 

Certified Personal Trainer (CPR)

 

 

 

Intended for persons who wish to design and implement exercise programs on an individual basis. 

Requirements:  18+ years of age and current CPR and AED certification.

 

American Council on Exercise (ACE)

Personal Trainer

Designed for fitness trainers providing any form of one-on-one or small-group fitness instruction.

Requirements: 18+ years of age and current CPR and AED certification.

 

Group Fitness Instructor Designed for fitness professionals teaching any form of exercise in a group setting.

Requirements: 18+ years of age and current CPR and AED certification.

 

Advanced Health and Fitness Specialist For fitness professionals designing exercise programs for individuals with the intent to decrease risk factors and improve health and fitness following rehabilitation.

Requirements

 

Lifestyle and Weight Management Consultant Designed for professionals who wish to develop sound, balanced weight-management programs that bring together the critical components of long-term weight management success.

Requirements:  18+ years of age, current CPR and AED certification, and a four-year degree in Exercise Science or related field (alternative: other ACE certification).
