Ten Tips to Healthier Eating

1.  Eat 100% Whole Wheat food items instead of items made with white flour. .. this goes for bread, pasta, and even rice!   People who eat a diet rich in whole grains have a lower risk of heart disease.  Also, whole grain carbohydrates make you feel full for a longer period of time!

2.  Eat Sweets in Small Amounts!  Try splitting your dessert with a friend.  It tastes just as good, no matter how much you eat!  In fact, researchers have determined that the first few bites of dessert taste the best!

3.  Stay hydrated - Not only will water keep your body clean, but sometimes dehydration tricks your body into thinking that you're hungry!

4.  Skip Second Helpings, and avoid Buffets!

5.  Trim visible fat from meat! and ask your butcher for lean mean cuts.

6.  Change the way you cook!  Grill food instead of frying it, steam food instead of boiling.  Steaming will help food retain important nutrients that can be lost with cooking, and no cooking oil is needed for grilling and steaming.

7.  Use your straw wisely!  Drinking with a straw makes you drink fluid faster.  So, you should use a straw when drinking water but should not use a straw when ingesting sugary drinks, like soda.

8.  Make sure half of your plate is vegetables, a quarter is starch and a quarter is a protein (such as meat or beans)..

9.  Eat breakfast!  Researchers have determined that breakfast sets up your eating habits for the entire day.  Set yourself up for a good day!

10.  Don't eat in front of the tv, or while reading.  Before you know it, you've eaten a lot more than you intended to!
